Introduction
Frozen in time, and built by the Sarkis Brothers in 1885, the Eastern & Oriential oozes with colonial charm. The essence of "a debonair English lady in a white gown settling into the Orient in the 1900's" is captured in this prestigious boutique hotel. Majestic, magic and sharing of fond memories are words that come to mind as you drive up its courtyard. "Staying in the Writer's Suite you indulge in a spot of Earl Grey before a sunset ride in a trishaw through the vibrant Chinese/Malay markets of Penang ". Live a day in the life of the Farquhars and enjoy the pride of Penang Island . Impeccable service. Hallmark hospitality. Get that Farquhar Feeling!
What's special about it?
What was once reminiscent is now resurrected. Way Out Experiences takes you back in time with the Eastern & Oriental Hotel, Penang or more fondly called E&O. It all starts as you drive up the courtyard, to the hotel's main entrance, a porter awaits dressed in 1900's kaki uniform, complete with gloves, knee-high socks and a cheerful smile.
Built in 1885, the Eastern & Oriental Hotel, Penang or E&O earned its place in history as one of the finest hotels of the British Empire . By 1927, the hotel was advertised as "the premier hotel east of the Suez ". Once the social playground for scores of upper class echelons, the E&O stands majestically with its Moorish minarets, spacious domed lobby and endless seafront. Among its more famous guests are Sir Noel Coward, Douglas Fairbanks, Mary Pickford, Rudyard Kipling, Somerset Maugham and Hermann Hesse. The Writer's Suites were thus inspired and can be booked on request. Even British R&B artist Craig David was here.
Re-opened after a major restoration and refurbishment programme that cost RM75 million, the Eastern & Oriental retains the old-world charm for which it was widely recognised. At the same, it incorporates modern-day facilities, necessary in this new millennium. Be part of their dream.
When can you travel?
All year. Penang's climate can be described as equatorial, a pleasant mix of warm, sunny days and occasional cooling rain storms which rarely last longer than an hour, with August through to November being the wettest months generally. Average rainfall is 255cms (100 inches) throughout the year. Humidity is usually high, and the temperature varies between 21 and 32 degrees Celsius (70 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit).
