Tioman Island is a nationally protected marine park. In their words, Japamala Resort & Spa practices a "the only things that goes into the sea from the resort and its surroundings are the sunbathers" policy. The stretch of beach at Japamala is also visited by Giant Green Turtles that have begun to build their nests there. Management is taking expert measures to ensure that the nests are protected from animal, as well as human, predators. These efforts contribute to the conservation of this endangered species in the region.

We work closely with the management and staff at the resort. We also influence the resort through our ecotourism Initiative that ensures that tourism in the area is sensitive to local, cultural and environmental needs, and are supported by the Malaysia Tourism Board in this endeavour. It is a delicate balance for a special place and one we look at seriously from an ethical stance. This is our commitment under our Fair Trade for Tourism policy.
