Sarawak , a peaceful backwater, was once ruled by the White Rajahs in the early 19 th Century. James Brooke, the first of the White Rajahs from Britain ruled with great appreciation and tolerance to the native Dayak tribes, honouring their tribal rituals and customs. Except for phasing out head hunting of enemies, James Brooke, unlike colonists of his time, helped tribes continue their way of life in dignity. These efforts of cultural preservation echo today. Where other sites of tribal Borneo are customised and contrived for mainstream tourism, Way Out takes you to the heart of Borneo , where tribal communities authentically live. You will discover how the Iban tribe's way of life thrives welcoming in modern facilities but never compromising ancient values. Values of "living in harmony with nature", "living as one with neighbours" are far superior then our Western ways. An eye opener as you feel you become reborn in Borneo . This time you travel you're going home different.
In the spirit of James Brooke, WOX is working closely with local operators and the Regency Pelagus Resort to use ecotourism as a means to preserve the culture of the Iban.
We work closely with the management and staff at the resort as well as the nearby tribal Long Houses and are well aware of the socio-economic, political and environmental impacts going on in the Pelagus region. If you as travellers have suggestions to make, we will pass these heard and make sure your voice is heard by the people in charge.
We are supported by the Sarawak Tourism Board in our ecotourism initiatives. We ensure that tourism in the area is sensitive to local, cultural and environmental needs. It is a delicate balance for a special place and one we look at seriously from an ethical stance. Your spend at the resort contributes greatly to the welfare of the locals of Pelagus Rainforest and helps preserve their culture. This is our commitment under our Fair Trade for Tourism policy.
